Should I choose a walking route that does not have hills?

Walking Hills

It's all uphill from here--and that's a good thing. Don't avoid walking up hills; they make you stronger. If a hill is too steep for comfort, zigzag up or down. Hill walking for exercise builds leg muscles, and you can enjoy the view while walking.

its a very good tip. I live in a steep valley. every trip out starts at a VERY steep angle. My legs are now quite strong and its easier to cycle now.

Hills make the walk interesting. Downhill can jar knees and toes so proper fitting footwear is a must in hilly terrain. A walking stick adds balance and a pleasureable way to mark your pace.
