May 17, 2002, Newsletter Issue #89: Consistency is Key

Tip of the Week

Many of the health benefits of exercise, such as improving cholesterol levels and lowering blood pressure, only last for 48-72 hours, so to really get those benefits, you have to work out consistently. If you work out hard, you need the consistent exercise to condition your muscles and avoid injury. What about weight control? Although the calories burned during exercise may be the same in one 3-hour walk as in six 30-minute outings, exercise, especially vigorous exercise, has something of an after-burn effect, raising your metabolism and calorie burning for a period of time after the workout, which gives the advantage to regular exercise.
