Nicholas Frank

Expert Guru

My name is Nicholas Frank and I love to help people, which might explain why I got into Personal Training. Instead of staying at the surface I dove in and have 5 certifications in the industry. I originally worked at the 24 Hour Fitness Ultra-Sport in Irvine, CA and learned from several individuals much smarter than me how to train properly. This could be regarding how bodies function in their many ways, how to treat postural distortions, proper eating habits and the best ways to attain great health. I am a Master Trainer at 24 Hour Fitness, work with people In Home and am passionate about helping people not only achieve their goals but to feel great while getting there (both mentally and physically).

3 Tips from Nicholas Frank

I don't do Cardio

"What!?!?" That is what my clients say to me all the time, but I truly almost never do traditional cardio, such as the treadmill or elliptical. People think that the key to losing weight is cardio - well, they are correct, but not in the traditional fashion.
The average person burns their weight x 12 in calories/day. So, if JimBob weighs 200lbs then he probably burns about 2,400 calories/day. Well, I only weigh 155lbs, but I burn around 4,500 calories a day (Gasp!), some days more around 5,000 if I have a real good workout. Why you ask? Well for several reasons, but the main one being 'Lean Muscle Mass'. For every pound of lean muscle that your body has, that 'calories burned/day' number gets higher by 50 calories (you can do the math to figure out my muscle mass if you want), and the way to get more muscle mass is to workout with weights. That's all I do is workout with weights, and while performing I workout my total body and keep my heart rate up by not taking long breaks and by doing high repetitions of each set. I get cardio-respiratory (heart) exercise as well as weight bearing exercise, and when my clients do it they see results that stick and feel good afterwards. That stone I'm throwing kills both those birds!

Pre-workout supplements? How about a Banana

If you are taking pre-workout supplements and not feeling/seeing much of a difference, it could be that the supplement is not good and/or has improper ingredients. Instead, try eating a Banana right before/during exercise. Bananas have potassium and calcium, which increase muscle contraction and allow you to work harder/lift more. Bananas also relieve cramps and will help you to be less sore. Also, if you eat a small amount of parsley (yes parsley, the little green leaf) before your workout, it will aid in your potassium absorption ability, giving you am even better workout! So, try it for a week, and you'll stop taking all those silly pre-workout supplements.

What should I eat before going on a long run?

Blackberries. This wonderful fruit not only has very powerful health benefits through its antioxidant content, but it also helps cure inflammation and promotes oxygen in the body. Well, when running, you need oxygen, and wouldn't it be great if your body didn't get tired/inflamed halfway? I think so. Blackberries are great for you, and great for improving your workout regime.
