February 17, 2006, Newsletter Issue #213: When Weight Loss Doesn't Work

Tip of the Week

Sometimes it seems that you can do all the right things for weight loss, diet and exercise, and it just doesn't work. There are several possibilities for what causes this. For some people, it just takes longer for the program to kick in. The body tries to defend its weight. A diet that is too low in calories can also backfire and lower your metabolism so much you burn fewer calories. Your genetics and previous diet history can affect this. If you're sure of your program, give it at least two months to work. If there is no progress, get advice from a registered dietician and have a certified personal trainer check your exercise program. Don't give up. Healthy eating and exercise is good for you even if you don't lose weight right away.
