September 12, 2003, Newsletter Issue #154: 30 pounds in 30 days

Tip of the Week

Most of us who want to lose weight really want to lose body fat. A pound of stored fat represents 3500 calories. If you come up with a deficit of 500 calories a day, say by walking an extra 2 or 3 miles and cutting out a couple of soft drinks from your diet, you can lose a pound of fat a week, which is reasonable. Finding a deficit of 3500 calories a day is not reasonable. Do the math. Rapid weight loss is usually water and will come back just as quickly as it went. Or it could be some muscle loss, which you don`t want either. Just walk past that phone pole.
