I love your tips, they are very descriptive and really help with understanding proper form , but sometimes it is hard to visualize. I would like to also see descriptive pictures accompany the verbal descriptions. Since most of us use mirrors to check our form, this would be very helpful.
Where can I post applause for your excellent tips? I really love your daily tips on workouts, you have improved the exercise lifetips 1000% since taking over as Exercise Guru. Most of my interest lies in weight workouts. The push vs pull tip was great. Please add tips on pros/cons on use of the pully. Thank you! Matt
it is me again. i needed to know if it is bad to worry about my weight at twelve years old. i hope not. i dont stress, i just feel self conscience about it. when i wear bikinis, i try to hide because i feel that im fat. most people say its because im going through puberty and im bloated. well, if that is the case, i need to know how to get rid of at least some of it.
Kris - I can say that I would love to include descriptive pictures but I am sorry to say that I am not able to at this time. I will do my best to give great descriptions and tips in regards to looking at yourself in the mirror, and the proper postural things to look for.
Brittany - You are too young to worry about your weight. What you can start to think about is whether or not you are moving....and I mean is do you get home from school/work/friends/the day and just sit down? If so, your body is not getting the exercise it needs for you to feel good. Just go outside! Go run in circles, jump a rope, climb a tree, kick a ball, try and do hand stands, (play) fight your other siblings, pretend you know Kung-Fu. Anything that makes you move is good for you, so just be active rather than sitting down most of the time. :)
"I don't do Cardio" !!!
i am 19, about 215 (female)and trying to change my life. I just wanted to ask should i do cardio to lose body fat and weight train too??? Or should i do what u have down???
Kimberly, for me I know how to exercise the body to accomplish maximal effort in my muscles and tire me out while giving me a 'cardio' workout. (read my most recent blog post on 'Round 3'). For me this works fine. For you, who is trying to see results right now, I would absolutely recommend doing 'Cardio' 3-4 times a week and weight train 2-3 times a week. I think trying it on your own for a few weeks is a great idea, but enlisting the help of a Personal Trainer is what will truly help you to see the results you are looking for. It's a coach that helps you get to where you want to be. So yes, do Cardio, and absolutely also perform weight bearing exercise.
So I was 190Lbs Last June 08 I have lost about 30lbs by working out I'm now about 159Lbs
...I will eat anything....I try to eat healthy but it doesnt always work out but any way these past few 2 or 3 months its been hard loosing weight...i keep loosing 2 or 3 and gaining it right away...and havent really lost any...I heard its the "winter cold"...that it makes you gain weight..is this true??? but then again I live in TX and its really not that cold :(

Sara - eh, the 'winter cold' is just an excuse for people who gain weight to feel better about their weight gain. You need to remember these four epic words in regards to your weight loss goals "Move More, Eat Less". You are consuming too many calories and need to eat less. Exercising more too will obviously help you see results faster. Honestly though your food intake is most important, so be sure to watch what goes in your mouth.
Sajesh - No. At the very least eat a bowl of cereal or a banana, banana being a better choice. Fruit is always a great choice in the morning because of its natural sugars that give you a little boost.
I have been working out for about 30 days and i have lost 20 pounds now i weight 165 i want to weigh 135-140.I drink water all day everyday i try to work out everymorning for about 45 minutes..I want to lose the rest of my stomache fat and 20 pounds in about 27 days.what can i do to lose more weight. oh and some good ab workouts ..

I suffer from lower back pain and would like to know more about the types of weight lifting and other exercise that i can do to help rid myself of this problem. My problems is related to my weak muscles that support the back and spine.
Victoria, losing weight takes time. Did the weight come on in 27 days? No, it took much more than that. Keep doing what you're doing, just try not to lose more than 2lbs/week. Oh, and check up with your doctor to make sure that the way you are approaching your weight loss goals has been healthy thus far :)
Harvey - the best foods are fruits, vegetables, meats and nuts! Oh! You stick to these guys and these guys alone, you will mightily lose weight. I dare you: if you only eat fruits, vege's and meat (with minimal nuts), you will lose weight and feel very healthy. Try it!
Deia - that is something that a professional would have to look at. They would have to see you and diagnose the problem. Check with your doctor, chiropractor or a knowledgeable personal trainer.
I'm 36yrs old,i exercise 4 to 5 day's a week running and weights. I lost 65lbs in two years, but now i seem to have lost my butt...How can i get it back??? please help...thanks..
I have had a shoulder injury for some time. I did kick boxing before I hurt my shoulder. After the injury I had to let up on my use and stress on my shoulder for some time. Well because they could not fix my shoulder without surgery (which I refused because the chance of losing the use of my arm) I have only been doing minor training with my arm. I know the muscles in my shoulder are shot. I want to began working on them again. How would you suggest I do so. As of the moment I have not started muscle training but have been doing normal exercises and stretching. The pain in my shoulder is worse then I thought it would be. My doctor said that it was a good time to start working my shoulder out. Only he suggested I not pursue kick boxing again. (I agree) Any advice? Thank you.
i am 65. i don't really like working out but it gives me energy and i want to burn fat and firm up. i work out everyday. 15 min on treadmill at 10.0 incline and 3.0 mph. then i use machines. is this ok

I just came upon your blog, and I love every topic you have written. Its like an "AHA" moment for me. Its like saying, "no wonder I wasn't losing weight before" :) Anyways, I have been going to the gym for many years and I would lose the weight and come right back off after I stop moving. These last few months I have lost 20 lbs, and motivated to keep losing more, and be healthy. My only worries are my arms. They are big. I tried biceps, triceps exercise, but I am afraid that it may become more bigger than it is because of the additional muscles. Thanks.
here is my case.i use to weigh 262 pound but im a soccer player and gained weight by not playing for a very long time about a year ago i started playing again and am down to about 225 pounds i am on summer vacation and am trying to loss weight and get in shape to join my schools soccer team next year. Ive been running a mile and walking 2 and playing soccer for about 2-3 hours a day i need help to know if this is a good plan to loss weight and if there's anything else you would recommend i do.also if there are any protein shakes i can make at home to drink before i run. also thanks a lot for all the tips i already read they are really helpful.
Jenn, your butt is not gone :) You just have not been exercising your glutes properly. I would speak to a personal trainer next time you workout, asking them the best ways to work your butt. Essentially, you need to work on 'hip-extension'. (Look it up) You are weak there because you say you have "no butt". Work on your hip-extension, and you'll get back your butt.
Amoni, please do not start kick-boxing. It sounds to me that you need to see a workout specialist about this issue. If you try working out on your own you may make it worse. My advice would be to speak to a Personal Trainer or Physical Therapist and have them train you, especially focusing on your shoulder. If you choose a Personal Trainer, make sure it is someone who truly understands the movements of the body and the shoulder. Beware of heavy weight oo, you want to do lots of repetitions with light weight.
Linda - you need to vary your exercise more. If you can tell me everything you're doing that quickly, you are going to Plateau quickly or you have been for a long time now. You need to try new exercises, new machines, longer times on cardio equipment, harder runs...etc. Make sense? This will help you see more results and feel younger!
Sam - don't want to lose your boobs huh? Ok, can't promise anything but here's a tip for a nice figure...Work on your balance. The more single-leg/single-arm exercises you incorporate, the more your core (abdomen) will have to work. This way you will not only get nice abs, but a leaner and more fit total body. Sure, do some abdominal work as well, but focus on exercising your whole body, not just your abs.
Tina - you are right, the more arms you do, the 'bigger' they'll get. Not in the sense of big and buff, but yes your muscles' size will increase. Focus more on working big muscles (chest, shoulders, back, legs, butt, abdominals). You just want to make sure that when you exercise you are pushing yourself, aka you are sweating! Rock that sweat and you'll be sitting pretty.
Norman - if you really want to see results I would seek the help of a Personal Trainer, some kind of coach that can really push you to help you get better at soccer. By the way, protein shakes should be consumed after your workouts, not before. Have a banana (preferably) or some kind of carbohydrate before you workout to give you energy (fruit is always a good idea). Good luck!
here is my case: i weigh 137 pounds but i'm 5'1 that pretty much for my high. i don look fat but i have a little bit of stomach, i started ridding bike, i do it for 3 hours, 3 0r 4 times at week. my question is this could help me out. i want to know if i can reduce my leg with this exercise because i dont need that.
Me again what do you suggest i do to lose weight i have read about the cardio workouts and all of the other tips you have posted but to be more specific how should i go about my everyday, (what types of food should i eat when is the best time to work out how much time for cardio should i break in between days ect.)and most importantly what should i NOT eat or do and by the way thanks for the response to my other questions...
Hi - I love your blog first of all, its refreshing to have some real worthwhile advice! I have a specific problem where I've lost weight over the last year or so, and I'm 35 now and I have a good figure but basically if you look at a silhouette of me head on it used to be more hourglassed shaped, now - its in at the waist, out at the butt, then a weird in/out thing before you get to the thigh. What can I do to put weight on there, or build muscle I don't even know whether that was fat or muscle. Its like having a really big dimple or something - can you recommend anything? Please! thanks:)
In the past year Ive lost about 30Lbs, I work out Mon-Fri an hour each day. But for the past two months I have been under a lot of stess and even though I still work out the same I have gained about 5Lbs and I cant even loose 1lb and it stresses me even more!!!! Any sugestions???
Hi! These posts all look old, but I thought I might as well try this. My mother is about 53 and she is extremely out of shape. Walking down a 100 ft pathway and 2 flights of stairs makes her feel as though she will pass out. She has asked for my help to get backattack or some similar occurence. in shape, but I don't really know a good way to start her on exercise at an easy level. Do you have any suggestions?

Does a work out make you tired
Millie - yes and no. Sure, it couldn't hurt, but you also need to think about maybe reducing your food intake, as well as adding other types of exercise. Essentially if it doesn't make you sweat, it probably isn't doing much.
Norman - That question could be answered so many different ways, with so many good and different answers, on so many pages. I shall try to minimize... I would say no to any kind of fast food for sure, and always vary your workouts. Sweat gangster, sweat.
anne - your body is probably changing, and you may not be as active as you used to be. Start working out, or if you already do then it is time to push yourself harder. Your body will get back anti-dimple size, just really push yourself with exercise, 4-6 times per week, and give it a month or two.
Ayde - i know i sound like a broken record, but you need to change up your workouts. Also, when the body is stressed it is somehow harder to lose weight. (there is a technical term for it, and i don't know what it's called) Try new things that might relax you, like reading, hiking, swimming, slam dunking or making-out. Yup, I think all those would work :)
Kristen - sure there is. She just needs to keep moving. Whether it's sports like tennis or basketball or badminton, it will help. The more she gets used to moving around, whether at the gym or outside, the better she'll get at them.

Mattusa - you need to work on your 'scapular depression' ability (look it up). sure, your chin can go above the bar, but if you look like a hunch-back while doing it, you'll over-stress your upper trapezius, making your back actually weaker. Again, work on your scapular depression ability. (yes, look it up :)

Hi Nicholas. LOVE your blog...My question is, I am 46, in good shape. I work out 5-6 days a week doing both cardio and weights. My problem is my muffin top. Cannot get completely rid of it. Had 3 c-sections, wondering if it may never go away..How do I reduce the muffin top size?
