Will I have trouble falling asleep if I work out at night?

Exercise at Night

Most of us avoid vigorous exercise at night because it might interfere with sleep. Recent research with highly fit cyclists showed that vigorous exercise ending 30 minutes before bedtime did not interfere with sleep. This may apply more to fit people and will vary by individual, but if you have trouble getting your workout in during the day, you can give a nighttime exercise plan a try.

When I am restless or had a really intense day at work, I like to take out my stress in the gym or with cardio. It relaxes me and helps me sleep better.

My best friend and I used to exercise around 7-8 p.m. every night and it worked for us. We were losing weight and it actually helped us sleep better, because we were so tired from the work out. But I think it's whatever works best for you, depending on when you can squeeze it in. I say as long as you are active that's all that counts!

i prefer night time or later on in the day because I am warmed up and tend to have more energy and can put more effort into me workout.

I go to a gym that is open till 11pm. I have gone as late as 10 and it has not interfered with my sleep. I feel better knowing I got my work out in than if I have not gone. Without going it would weigh on my mind and interfere more than going.

I play tennis every Wednesday from 8:30-10pm, and I have no trouble going to sleep at all. If anything, I sleep better and it's easier to fall asleep.

Some people will sleep better after exercise, and that's fine. For most people it is harder to fall asleep immediately after working out, because your heart is still mightily pumping blood. Once your body is more accustomed to exercise though, your heart rate will go down faster and allow you to be ready to rest quicker after intense exercise.
