You can lose weight just with exercise, but you have to do quite a bit. An easy run of about an hour a day, or a fast walk of about an hour and a half, will give you a weight loss of about a pound a week, providing that you don`t change your eating habits. Do half as much, and you will lose half as much, etc. This is for an average size individual.
For most people, exercise combined with some calorie restriction is more practical. Even more effective is to change your eating habits for the better. Nothing is more effective than trading off calorie dense foods, like chocolate, for non-dense foods, like veggies and fruits. So you don`t really even need to `diet` to make great changes. Just do some exercise and eat healthy.
