March 21, 2003, Newsletter Issue #133: Running on Your Toes

Tip of the Week

Running on your toes is not a good idea. The calf muscles propel you forward by pulling the heel up. You lose this by locking your calf muscle so your heel doesn`t come down. You also risk injury to the Achilles tendon and knee. It`s common to check the condition of running shoes by checking the wear pattern on the heel, implying there should be some wear on the heel. (This doesn`t apply to sprinters or hurdlers.)
