February 7, 2003, Newsletter Issue #127: Carbohydrate

Tip of the Week

Carbohydrate is one of the major sources of calories (energy) in food. Even using fat for energy properly requires the help of some carbs. Carbohydrate is the main constituent of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and is found in dairy products as well. If you cut out carbs, you lose some vital nutrients. Carbohydrate is also the body`s preferred energy source, so if you work out, you had better have some carbs to work with. Now refined carbohydrate, including sugar, white flour, candy, pastries, soft drinks, and the like, furnish calories without much in the way of nutrients, and may also disturb your blood sugar. So it`s refined carbs you want to minimize. Eat those good carbs.
