February 21, 2003, Newsletter Issue #129: Type I or II Muscle Fibers

Tip of the Week

Type I fibers are characterized by low force and high endurance, and Type II by high force and low endurance. Endurance athletes have more Type I, and strength athletes have more Type II. Most of us are about half and half. If you do only endurance training, you don`t get to the Type IIs, and they will tend to shrink away when you get older. This is one of the reasons strength training is recommended, especially for middle aged and older people.
