January 17, 2003, Newsletter Issue #124: Food Politics

Tip of the Week

The government tells us to eat less. The food industry tells us to eat more. Well, maybe not in so many words, but they have to sell their product, don`t they? The food industry in the U.S. is so efficient that it produces about 3800 calories per day for every person. This is almost twice as much as the average person should be eating. (We`re not eating all of it, of course. We waste a lot. And this is a world where many people can`t get enough to eat.) The food industry also influences government policy, as do all industries. There is nothing illegal about this; it`s just economics. Be as skeptical of health claims and offers of more food for your money as you would of any other hard sell. It`s our responsibility to learn to choose the food that is best for us.
