Three-pound dumbbells are too light for most healthy young and middle-aged women. Strength improvement and muscle toning depend on overload, and 3 lb does not offer enough resistance. However, 3 lb may be called for when the goal is rehab, for men or women. In addition, larger muscles can handle heavier weights, so don`t do your whole routine with the same dumbbells.
