April 19, 2002, Newsletter Issue #85: Is It Aerobic?

Tip of the Week

In the old days, aerobics was "aerobic dance," then expanded to low impact, then step. Now aerobics teachers are called group exercise instructors, and many classes in the aerobics room are not aerobic. Aerobic exercise involves sustained, rhythmic movement of the large muscles, usually the legs, increases oxygen requirements, and raises your heart rate. Stretch-and-tone, various "pump" classes using strength training moves, and abs-only are not aerobic. If you don`t get at least 20 aerobic minutes in a class, make sure you get your cardio (aerobic) exercise somewhere else.
