December 20, 2002, Newsletter Issue #120: Why Do You Work Out?

Tip of the Week

I asked members of the health club at an engineering firm how important various reasons for exercising were to them. These were mostly runners, although there were cyclists, walkers, and weight trainers too. The most important reason to the men was cardiovascular health, with the second being weight loss or control. Among women, relieving tension was tops, with weight control second. Social aspects were not important to this group, but these were runners and there may have been a different answer from golfers or aerobics participants. Improving appearance was of some importance to most everybody. Of course, you can start exercising to look better and end up improving your health as well, or start for health and improve your appearance as a side benefit. Not bad!
