December 13, 2002, Newsletter Issue #119: Athletic Shoes

Tip of the Week

If you`re a runner, you should have good running shoes, especially if you run on hard surfaces. This will help prevent injury. Fitness walkers often prefer running shoes because walking shoes tend to be all leather, whereas running shoes have mesh that keeps your feet from getting too hot when you go long distances. Don`t use your running shoes for tennis or aerobics, because these require support for sidewise motion and running shoes don`t have that. If you do most of your workouts in the gym, such as some aerobics, some cardio machines, and some weight training, cross trainers may be your best bet. You don`t need to buy the most expensive shoes. Check out last year`s models on sale. The rule-of-thumb is to replace running shoes after 500 miles. You may not realize that your old shoes don`t have much left until you see how good the new ones feel.
